Lindsay Wasson, IRSEA President 2022-2023, presenting to the meeting
IRSEA Sub-committees and Related Workstreams paper

The paper prepared in March 2022 by Lindsay Wasson, Janina Sulikowski and Kerryanne Knox, ‘IRSEA – a ‘Member Value’ Organisation, was approved in principle at the 28 March 2022 Executive Meeting.

Building on past successes and initiatives, a number of strategies and structures were proposed to help provide enhanced value to members. These strategies were in line with the three key ‘IRSEA PRIORITIES 2021’ established by our then President, Graham Dawson, and were presented under the domains of Recognition, Responsibility and Reward.

Tony Re, a member of IRSEA, provided the research report shown opposite.
Characteristics of an Outstanding School Principal

Four groups of staff members at a school where the principal had been acknowledged nationally for outstanding leadership were interviewed to give their personal reasons for the principal’s achievement. Ten characteristics are commonly listed in articles outlining characteristics of an outstanding school principal. Using the focus group technique, the researcher wanted to discover if these characteristics would be noted in the discussions by staff and if other characteristics of outstanding leadership would emerge.

IRSEA – a ‘MEMBER VALUE’ ORGANISATION

Issue:

  • Why join IRSEA?
  • What value does it have for me?
  • Is there any point in becoming or remaining a member?

To be blunt, these are important questions without persuasive answers. Confronted by this stark reality, the Executive Committee has been in the process of recasting IRSEA as a more dynamic, more engaging and more influential organisation for its members.  However, we cannot hope to fulfil these aspirations without offering compelling answers, clearly and unambiguously, in a membership value-package we can first design, communicate, and then deliver, to current and prospective members.

IRSEA Executive Committee members Lindsay Wasson, Janina Sulikoski and Kerryanne Knox developed a paper in response to the questions posed above. This paper was endorsed by the Executive Committee for action.

Dr Graham Dawson

As IRSEA President in 2021, Graham Dawson drafted a position paper on Priorities for the consideration of members. The priorities outlined in the paper were accepted by the membership and regular updates on progress are available by clicking on the title below.

IRSEA PRIORITIES FOR 2021–2022 CONSULTATIVE PAPER

INTRODUCTION

The IRSEA Executive Committee has developed a set of priorities for the Institute that are to be addressed in 2021–22. This paper presents these priorities and the actions to be undertaken to achieve them.

CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND

At its June meeting, the IRSEA Executive Committee considered three priority areas to be addressed by the Institute during 2021 and 2022. The three issues were.

  1. Improve the dialogue and the professional relationship between IRSEA and the Department of Education (DoE) so that IRSEA members can contribute more effectively to the community discourse on education issues and contribute to policy development across the education
  2. Increase IRSEA membership, particularly among DoE and TAFE senior officers nearing or commencing retirement
  3. Improve communication and interaction with IRSEA.
